Why Would You Need a Business Coach or Mentor?

I’ve been a CEO. And looking back, I see where a mentor/coach could have benefited me:

• There’s no peer group when you’re CEO. Everyone is a subordinate and doesn’t share your point of view.
• You need an unbiased view. I have no motivation beyond telling you the truth. No brown-nosing, no politics, no drama.
• It’s tough to be objective about a situation when you’re close to it.
• A mentor brings a broad range of experience. I may have seen something exactly like what you’re facing.
• You need confirmation when you’re doing the right thing.
• I offer one kind of feedback – honest. You probably don’t get much of that.
• CEO is a lonely job. It helps to have someone to talk to.

I spent 15 years as CEO of a company. Though I always have a CEO’s perspective, I can spot potential problems with morale, employees, customers, vendors, and financing.
